Ode to the Appalachian Trail

Description: Earl Shaffer, the first person, in 1948, to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, became the oldest A.T. thru-hiker 50 years later in 1998, a month short of his 80th birthday. On that final thru-hike, Earl kept a trail journal of his experiences in the form of an ode, or prose poem--an ancient form of poetry that Earl loved. Following Earl’s passing in 2002, the Earl Shaffer Foundation published a limited edition of just 1,000 copies of Earl's 1998 trail journal under the title of Earl’s choosing, Ode to the Appalachian Trail. New, unread, and pristine copies from that one-time, limited printing are now available through eBay, beautifully illustrated with 74 color photographs of the Appalachian Trail contributed by Earl’s friends. Ode to the Appalachian Trail is replete with observations of the Trail’s geography and wildlife, historical notes, and grateful mentions of the old and new friends--“Trail angels”—who offered Earl hospitality and encouragement on his long hike from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin in Maine. All proceeds from sale of this book go to the non-profit Earl Shaffer Foundation Inc. a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, to support its mission of preserving Earl’s legacy, promoting the value of wilderness hiking, and preserving the Appalachian Trail.
