Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula is a magnificent world map created by the Dutch cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu in 1606. This ornately decorated and beautifully colored map epitomizes the baroque style favored during the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. Blaeu’s map features two hemispheres, providing the impression of looking at both sides of a globe simultaneously. The voyages of Christopher Columbus (1492) and Amerigo Vespucci (1499) are mentioned at upper left. Australia and Antarctica have yet to be discovered. In the lower corners are maps of the northern and southern polar regions. A dedicatory cartouche (lower right) gives the publication year. In its border decoration map draws heavily from classical history and mythology, the top border incorporating symbolic images of the Sun & Moon and the five known planets. The lower border mirrors these seven heavenly bodies with the seven great wonders of the classical World, including the Pyramid of Cheops, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The side borders in turn mirror each other in depicting, on the left, the four Elements of Fire, Air, Water & Earth and, on the right, the Four Seasons.
