Description: This cute fiction hardcover is an early introduction to parts of speech for the young learner and early writer and shows how words work together. It has a fun twist, as it humanizes words and turns nouns and verbs into characters. Children will learn the difference between nouns and verbs and the jobs they perform in the English language! It offers not just the definition of these parts of speech, but also how they rely on each other, providing a nice jumping off point for discussing sentence structure. The language in the book is targeted toward younger kids, with simple vocabulary and short sentences. This book is brand new and in excellent condition! I did not include a photo of the back of the book, so that I could include another of the pages within. But, the back cover is also in perfect shape! This item comes from a smoke free home. This book measures 10" x 10" and is 32 pages. It was written by Robin Pulver and illustrated by Lynn Rowe Reed. The publisher is Holiday House and the copyright date is 2006. The last page of the book is titled "Kids Can Play Around with Nouns and Verbs" and has fun word games for readers. It includes exercises such as the following: matching up nouns to make compound words, determining which verbs can also be nouns, tongue twisters, a verb verse, and a riddle. The answers are upside down, at the bottom of the page. Children and teachers both love Robin Pulver's entertaining and informative books with a humorous side to them. They focus on different phonics/language arts topics, but the message is always silly and kid-friendly rather than laborious or boring. The following is a synopsis of the plot of the book: It's Field Day in Mr. Wright's class and not just for the students. When the children in Mr. Wright's class are headed outside for an enjoyable field day, the nouns and verbs are left behind in the classroom. They start looking out the window and realize that they want to participate in Field Day and don't want to miss out on all the fun. They decide to have a field day of their own and create one! They want to play their own games! Kids will enjoy seeing the nouns and verbs inventing their own games, such as tug-of-words and three-legged races, in this companion book to Robin Pulver's "Punctuation Takes A Vacation". But, nobody is getting anywhere! After dividing up on teams, with all of the nouns together and all of the verbs together, the nouns and verb soon realize that they can't get much accomplished without each other. They have to first learn about the kind of teamwork needed to make a sentence. They need each other and have to work together to get something done! So, they reform teams, so they can actually play. When students return to the classroom, they realize that the nouns and verbs have rearranged the room to show how important they are. The students find a crazy letter that teaches them the above lesson! The concept of this story is unquestionably quite silly, but is fun and the principles of "noun" and "verb" are taught quite well through the storyline. Children will definitely realize, through the clever initial pairing of all verbs and all nouns, that sentences need both nouns and verbs in order to work. The book gives a lot of examples of nouns and verbs in our everyday world and is a great tool for teaching grammar in the classroom or at home. And, the brightly colored, super energetic illustrations sure to add a lot of fun! Just like the high activity verbs that strut across the pages, this book is where the action is and has engaging and creative illustrations that are eye-catching and funny. Pulver's humorous offering presents an appropriately athletic point of access to an often too-dry subject. And, Reed's whimsical, vividly-colored cartoons, with a collage-style, capture the high-energy activity, showing triangular-shaped verbs smiling, hopping, and whining their way through the story, accompanied by a variety of animated classroom objects. Kids will love not only the pictures in the book, but also the extra dialogue, by the little noun and verb characters, within the speech bubbles, as they are full of their respective words (nouns saying nouns; verbs saying verbs)! Although the emphasis is on silliness, the author makes her point about the parts of speech, and even the youngest listeners will realize that sentences need both nouns and verbs in order to make sense. This colorful book, with illustrations actively moving throughout, is wonderful. It encourages children to think about words and how nouns and verbs are both needed to get things done and to express ideas clearly. The text and illustrations work well together, conveying important topics in a lively and zany way. I especially liked how the teacher, Mr. Wright, was not always right, as the nouns and verbs taught him something, too. This story will get kids excited about the possibilities of mixing up nouns and verbs to make silly sentences like Mr. Wright. I also love that the book conveys the important theme of working together as a team with those that have different strengths and weaknesses than your own. This item is difficult to find in a hardcover version, especially in brand new condition! I have not seen any others currently selling online. This interactive read aloud book would be a wonderful addition to a kingergarten-4th grade classroom library! It would also be great to have in a household with young children! I am hoping to find it a good home.
