Description & Condition: Art Collection of Carl PuglieseCarl was an American painter and illustrator who was friends with other illustrators including Norman Price, Tom Lovell, Dean Cornwell, Howard Pyle, J C Leyendecker and many others. I will be listing many pieces from his collection.Norman Price New York artist (1877-1951)Up for sale is this antique original watercolor on paper laid on board illustration painting. It is titled "The Happy Parrot Series" Part 2 Toad-Face and is the original drawing for page 62 in the Book by Robert Chambers. It depicts a man holding a pistol and peeking through a sliding panel at two men in the back room talking by candlelight. It is unsigned but identified by Price on reverse and is in good condition. Image measures 10 1/4" by 9 1/2" and olive green board 15" by 12". The caption below reads "Toad Face Part 2 As Sinclair shuffled into the bar the little old man looked a bit disturbed." There is a partial Liberty Art Dept Paper label on reverse and stamp on front lower margin.Here is some info on the artist:Illustrator, Norman Mills Price was born in Brampton, Ontario (1877) and began his studies at the Ontario School of Art. Around 1901 he spent time in London, studying at the Goldsmith's Institute; Westminster School of Art; and with Cruikshank. While in London, he was the founder of Carlton Studios.He later went on to Paris, studying at the Academie Julian, with J.P. Laurens and R.E. Miller. He did freelance work in Paris until an assignment in Belgium for Century brought him to the attention of other American publishers. In 1911, he had a studio in New York City, and worked for such publication as Harper's, Cosmopolitan, and Liberty.He illustrated the novels: "The Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare (1905), The Rogue's Moon (1929), Leif Erikson the Lucky (1939), Treasure Island," and other books.
