Noritake Marseilles 2 Saucers 5 1/2" Yellow Blue Bands w/Gold HTF 1918-1921+

Description: Noritake Marseilles 2 Saucers 5 1/2" Yellow Blue Bands w/Gold HTF 1918-1921+ Exquisite Decorative Set of 2 SAUCERS 5 1/2", Bands w/Gold, from Noritake, Japan, circa 1918-1921+, now long discontinued DESCRIPTION:  This pattern is so elegantly simple.  Noritake’s Marseilles pattern features a wide cream band between the inner gold verge line and the smooth edge of the saucer rims.  The border on the rim has a narrow yellow band, geometric patterning, and a wider band of blue with small white tulip shapes. This is capped off by a narrow outer band of gold.  The center is the bright white of the porcelain china.   The design looks so classic.  All rims are trimmed in gold.  This makes a beautiful display set or can be used everyday as a functional set.  Please note that Noritake had both the Marseilles pattern having gold trim (1918-1921+) and the newer Marseille (1966-1981) which is a different with white on white pattern having platinum trim. CONDITION:  While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb.  There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines.  There are no utensil marks & no wear to the gold. DIMENSIONS:  The saucers have a diameter of  5 1/2" and height of 13/16". HISTORY/MARKS:   Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake.  Noritake Company has a rich history of producing porcelain china all the way from  January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan with its huge kaolin clay sources.  The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911.  The backstamp on this piece is the gold M-in-Wreath Mark with Noritake on the top.  Under that is "Made in Japan".  In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918.  Spain identifies this mark as #26.16 which was used 1918-1931.  The Marseilles pattern was one of the first produced and was discontinued after 1921.
