Background To issue: Norfolk Island has an unfortunate record for avian extinctions, and the stamps feature two birds long lost from the territory. The Norfolk Island Kaka (Nestor productus) was a large parrot at around 38 centimetres in length, closely related to New Zealand’s extant Kaka. It occurred on both Norfolk and Phillip Islands and was last observed in the wild during the early decades of the 19th century.
