Nipponanthemum nipponicum is a perennial in the Asteraceae family. A native to Japan. Some common names are Nippon daisy or Montauk daisy. Naturalized now along the seashores of New Jersey and New York. It is the only species in the genus Nipponanthemum. It can grow 3-4 feet tall and wide as a shrub. It has alternate leaves and is clustered on the bottom of the stems. The flowers are around 3 inches across and come out singly. The discs in the middle can be red or purple but usually yellow. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Well-drained soil is needed. Birds, bees, and butterflies will visit the flowers. Seeds are from the same plants in the pictures. Zones 5-9 Germination Nipponanthemum nipponicum, or Montauk Daisy, can be grown from seeds, though it's worth noting that it can be a bit slow to establish from seed. To germinate these seeds, start indoors in late winter or early spring. Sow the seeds in a seed tray or small pots with a well-draining seed starting mix. Lightly press the seeds onto the soil surface without covering them, as they require light for germination. Maintain consistent moisture by misting or using a humidity dome, and place the tray or pots in a warm location, around 70-75°F (21-24°C). Germination can take several weeks, so be patient. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into individual pots or into the garden, spacing them about 18 inches (45 cm) apart. Montauk Daisies are known for their longevity and late-season blooms, making them a charming addition to any garden.
