BID WITH CONFIDENCE - SATISFACTION GUARANTEED NEWFOUNDLAND C2 ONE DOLLAR 1919 TRANS ATLANTIC FLIGHT SURCHARGE VF/XF MPH CV$300 "Trans - Atlantic/AIR POST,/1919./ ONE DOLLAR." overprint on 15 cent scarlet 'Seal Herd on Rocks' stamp from the John Cabot 400th anniversary of the "Discovery of Newfoundland" and 60th jubilee of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne of England issue of 1897. A total of 10,000 stamps in blocks of 25 (5x5) were over printed for use on the Alcock and Brown and other projected Trans Atlantic flight attempts. There are 5 different printing varieties in each block of 25: Type I - normal surcharge - 6,400 stamps, Type II - no comma after 'POST' - 2,400 stamps, Type III - no period after '1919' - 400 stamps (setting position 14 only), Type IV - small comma after "POST' - 400 stamps (setting position 20 only), and Type V - 'E' of 'ONE' under 'A' of 'AIR' - 400 stamps (setting position 22 only). This stamp is Type I - the "normal" overprint. Excellent color and appearance, very well centered. Approximately 50% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging, hinge remnant. Sound, fault-free mint example of this iconic Newfoundland Airmail stamp. Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot.
