This detailed hand made design was by master artist Donald Pollard. A large crystal ball shape weighing about 5lbs is formed of the legendary optically pure glass and at it's center are sterling silver and 18k gold vermeil clad mistletoe leaves and approx. 43 cultured pear berries. This is signed Steuben in script on the bottom.Donald Pollard was a favorite mid century designer for Steuben. He is noted for a number of major works embellished with gold and jewels. He designed the US gift of state the Great Ring of Canada as well as many iconic vases and bowls such as the Trillium and Calyx bowls, Spiral and Whirlpool Vases and mid century modern barware. His works are in the collections of many museums.This rare vintage piece does not appear to have been displayed or out of it's red leather box, with no chips, no cracks, no scratches, no display wear scratches and no nicks or other damage. The 18K gold vermeil has a vintage patina. The Mistletoe Ball measures approx. 6" tall by 5" wide. The nearly fifty years old vintage red leather box is in good condition and is free of nicotine or mildew odors.Steuben was noted for their rigorous attention to detail and for the high quality of their glass. They stated in their literature that they did not market "seconds". In fact, they noted that such pieces were destroyed in house. Steuben Glass was founded by Frederick Carder in 1903 and was located in the Fingerlakes Region of New York State. By following strict standards for design and manufacture they achieved recognition as the world's premier glassworks. Steuben Glass was frequently the gift of state by US Presidents to foreign dignitaries. Steuben, a recognized luxury brand.
