Description: The New Harp of Columbia: A System of Musical Notation, with a Note for Each Sound, and a Shape for Each Note; Containing a Variety of Most Excellent Psalm and Hymn Tunes, Odes and Anthems, Happily Adapted to Church Service, Singing-Schools and Societies; Original and Selected, by M.L. Swan; Publisher: Pub. House of the M.E. Church, South. Smith and Lamar, Pub. agents, Nashville, Tenn., 1921, ©1867; 224 pages;16 x 24 cm; Hymns with music; Mostly for four voices (SATB), without accompaniment; contains shape-note notation; Reprint originally published, M.L. Swan,1867. "Elements of vocal music": pages 3-10. Good condition. The cover boards are both attached, but the paper connecting the end cover board is broken. All pages are present. It appears a young child was allowed to draw (always with erasable pencil marks) characters with long dresses and curly hair in the "Elements of vocal music" section, and on the first song (see photos). Only that one song has such markings. The drawings represent cultural factors (the boredom and artistic representations of children during singings), and in that sense are valuable. General pencil markings are also on the inside of covers. Otherwise I see no marking, tears, or stains. The outside back cover has a small dark mark.
