About the Book:Emmeline B. Wells served as a public figure for the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints for fifty years at the end of the nineteenth century. She edited the Woman’s Exponent, represented LDS women in national women’s organizations, defended her religion in the nation’s capitol, and worked to mitigate anti-Mormon sentiments. In 1910, at age eighty-two, she became Relief Society General President. Wells was a leading figure in LDS politics and women’s suffrage, helping to close the gap of misunderstanding between church members and the general public. Soon after her death in 1921, she was honored with a marble bust in the Utah’s capital building, the simple inscription aptly reading only “A Fine Soul Who Served Us.” Some Book Reviews:Janille rated it & it was amazing! One of my favorite historical figures ever - we named our second daughter after her. Her life is one of seeming contradictions - she was a staunch defender of women's rights and women's suffrage, also a polygamist wife, 3 times a widow, a mother of many daughters, had many spirited discussions with LDS general authorities, a writer and newspaper editor, music composer, spoke personally with 3 US presidents and many congressmen of her day, and was well traveled in both the US and Europe. If you like history and women in history, this is a great book for you. Jan rated it & really liked it!I am not too much into politics, but I have to say that Emmeline understood the ins and outs and what it took to get Utah women the rights they deserved. It breaks my heart that women of our generation don't remember this remarkable woman. She truly made a difference. The writing was strictly about her public life, trips to Washington, ideals, and arguments for and in behave of women. The research is thorough and well done. But it's very heavy reading. If you're smart, you'll read two or three lighter reads AS you are reading through this one, like I did. Copyright © 2018-2023 TDM Inc.
