Its nineteen mills are part of an ingenious drainage system built in about 1740. They were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The UNESCO citation for naming Kinderdijk a World heritage Site reads: “The outstanding contribution made by the people of the Netherlands to the technology of handling water is admirably demonstrated by the installations in the Kinderdijk-Elshout area.
