Description: **I Combine Shipping**: " House of Birds, A Historical Ethnography of a Tibetan Buddhist Nunnery in Nepal ". (ND - No Date). By Yolanda van Ede. Published by University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Softcover, about 9 1/2 by 6 1/2 by 1/2 inches, 232 pages. English. ***Hard to Find! Excellent book on a rare subject. The Author, Dr. Yolanda van Ede wrote this study to earn her doctorate at the University of Amsterdam. It's a beautiful book which should have been subject to mass market, for it's certainly a rare subject and incredibly detailed and well written. On that note it is also single spaced! The type of Buddhism practiced here and at Taishi Gomba is Drugpa Kargyudpa, which mixes elements of Shamanism and Buddhism. Dr van Ede lived among the Ani (female Buddhist renunciants, monks/nuns) of the Bigu valley in an effort to understand the culture and the position of nuns at the Bigu Gomba Monastary, and how the power of the Gelugpa system affects the political structure generally. She also interacted with many people within and outside of the community to understand the position of the monastary and people. This is a very dense, abstruse book with a lot of interesting information in it. There isn't much detailed information available on the day-to-day lives of Nepalese people, let alone women, let alone female monastics like the ones van Ede has studied. She placed her research in the context of the land and the people, giving an unparalelled verbal picture of the culture and people as they really are. Worth a read for those with a dedicated interest. See pics for chapter examples! I have several other books listed including several translations of the Quran or Qur'an, Muslim thought, Islamic theory and religion, Buddhism, and Buddhist philosophy, Yoga, Karate, Kuk Sool, Hwarang Do and Hapkido, Tai Chi, Taiji, Kung fu and other and martial arts if you're interested, please have a look.
