Description: Unique Native American bowl crafted from what looks like coral, but is actually a stone created by ocean worms (probably Dodecaceria) from a mix of calcareous tubes and sand. Colonies of such worms are common at Cape Meares, Oregon, near where this bowl likely originates. Obtained from the estate of a dairy farmer in Tillamook, Oregon whose farm was located a few miles from the indian village sites at the mouth of the Wilson River and Kilchis Point on Tillamook Bay. The bowl’s function is unknown. Likely used in cooking, the Tillamook (Killamook) tribe lived largely on sea food, including clams and crabs, and it could have been used for steaming. Drilled hole in the side, possibly to attach a wooden handle? Groove cut across top. Despite considerable research I have not been able to find anything remotely like this. (Willing to return to an appropriate tribal organization or donate to a legitimate museum of Native American artifacts).
