I will be posting more as the work is completed. This is a Nakamichi BX-300 stereo cassette deck from 1986. This has the direct drive dual capstan Sankyo based 3 head transport that Nakamichi used extensively across their line up in CR-7A CR-5A CR-4A etc. This deck has had very little use it was sitting in storage for years and required service. Sound reproduction is excellent on this machine you will rediscover your cassette tape collection. This deck exhibits coherence and spatial information that will encourage you to play tape after tape. I have had countless Nak decks professionally serviced and sold in the last 22 years. My goal is to provide a superior working example that needs nothing. As you may know there are fewer techs that can achieve success in this area. TESTING PROCEDURE AND SERVICE PERFORMED:Disassembled transport for cleaning inspection and overhaul Old back tension belt was broken in half Reconditioned mode and reel motor Lubricated all capstan and motor bearings Replaced idler tire and back tension belt Capstan belt is in good condition cleaned and reinstalled Cleaned rollers Cleaned all leaf switches and verified each switch has <1 ohm resistance consistently Verified guide height Replaced all power supply aluminum electrolytic capacitors for continued reliability. Cleaned all switches and potentiometers Reassembled deck Cleaned and demagnetized entire tape path Verified smooth and stable tape travel Set speed Adjusted head height azimuth and tilt using specified Nakamichi gauges and test tapes Set playback level and verified playback Frequency response is within specifications for head wear Verified bias current and adjusted frequency Adjusted bias traps Verified bias tune potentiometer is working Adjusted record bias and sensitivity using TDK D SA and MA tapes Complete calibration was performed in accordance with factory service manual using all appropriate test tapes gauges and equipment. Played several tapes through on both sides Made recordings on all tape types to ensure no further faults and recordings remain faithful to the source material DOCUMENTED TEST RESULTS:Tape speed deviation / W+F: +0.1% / <0.035% 0.04% peak WRMS (JIS) Distortion 400 Hz @ OdB: Normal: <0.7% CrO2: <0.5% Metal: <0.6% S/N ratio 400Hz, 3% THD IHF A-Wtd RMS: w/ metal tape- 62dB (No NR), 72dB (Dolby B) 78dB (Dolby C) Record Frequency response @ -20dB: Normal: 20-20kHz +/-1.5 dB, 11-22kHz +/-3 dB CrO2: 20-20kHz +1-1.5 dB 11-21kHz +/-3 dB Metal: 20-20kHz +/-1 dB, 11-22kHz +/-3 dB Cosmetic condition is excellent with very little signs of use. This is physically clean with no dirt or nicotine contamination, faceplate front very nice all labeling and graphics are completely intact, well door nice, no cracks or broken pieces. There is a small ding on right hand bottom corner from the underside. I have touched it up the front view exhibits this very minimally. Included will be the repair receipt and the old parts that were removed. This will be expertly packed with new ULINE heavy-duty materials for safe transit.
