Description: Images one through three show images of parent stock and a bonsai-staged young plant growing in a greenhouse in California. Both types of growth habits (erect and pendent) are shown here. Plants being offered for sale are shown in images four through six, recently transplanted to a conifer bark mix and potted in 3.5”/9 cm plastic rose pots.Very clean and healthy, leaf perfect, and near flowering sized juveniles. Still at a size suitable for training plant habit for different "looks". Myrmecodia sp. aff. longissima (aka “ex-Bali Nursery) is a rare and very different introduction to the US epiphytic succulent market. The caudexed ant plants are bizarre members of the coffee family (Rubiaceae). This species is nearly unique among the cultivated species in having massive, barrel-shaped and nearly spineless caudexes. The original seed stock was obtained from a commercial orchid nursery in Bali, but the plant is almost certainly of Indonesian Papuan (New Guinea) origin. Most characters (caudex, leaves, clypeoli) match M. longissima Valeton but there are some variances to that species’ description. Fruits yellow-orange. Of easy cultivation and tolerant of warm to cool temperatures. In many parts of the country, these plants can be grown as hanging plants in bright shade during the late spring, summer and early fall. Do well in bright bay windows and can be grown to full size in one with enough patience. Somewhat drought-tolerant, but prefers uniformly moist, not wet, growing conditions. A fantastic addition to any succulent collection! Ants are not required for successful cultivation of this species and the plant in my collection do not house ant colonies. All plants offered are greenhouse grown on benches in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
