Myles Birket Foster (1825 - 1899): was a celebrated English illustrator, watercolor artist, and engraver of the Victorian era. Born in North Shields, England, to a Quaker family, Foster relocated to London with his family in 1830, where his father established a successful beer-bottling company. Initially involved in his father's business, Foster's artistic talent led him to an apprenticeship with renowned wood engraver Ebenezer Landells. He contributed illustrations to publications like Punch magazine and the Illustrated London News. Foster's skills extended to book illustration, and he taught himself to paint in watercolors during the 1850s. His evocative illustrations for Longfellow's "Evangeline" and other poetry books garnered widespread acclaim, propelling him to become a prominent watercolor artist. Foster's travels took him across Scotland, the Rhine Valley, the Swiss lakes, and Italy, particularly Venice, where he captured the charm of the landscapes. In 1863, he settled in Witley, Surrey, establishing a home known as "The Hill," which he adorned with the decorative works of Edward Burne-Jones and Morris & Company. It was during this time that Foster produced his most renowned works, depicting sentimentalized views of the English countryside, often criticized for their idealized portrayal but recognized for their meticulous detail and execution. His paintings were prominently featured on Cadbury chocolate boxes, and he exhibited over 400 paintings at the Royal Academy over his illustrious career. Foster's enduring popularity as a watercolor artist led The Times to refer to him as the "most popular water-colour artist of our time" upon his passing in 1899. Today, his work stands as a testament to his commitment to capturing the vanishing rural life of Victorian England.
