Description: My Sweet Elixir Review by Dave Thompson Emerging from Ireland's You're a Star TV show, and only narrowly missing out on representing his country at Eurovision, Fran King had a lot to do if he was to surpass his Beautification debut album. Thankfully, My Sweet Elixir is up to the task, from the opening pop harmonics of "All About Me" with its twisting melody and multiplex counterpoints, through the wryly nostalgic "The Note," and on through nine other slabs of pure, pretty melody. King's vocals are even more assured than last time out, and if ghosts of '60s and '70s songwriters past canter across almost every song ("Father & Son" is unapologetically first-album Paul McCartney), then that only adds to the album's allure. Recorded for the most part with a full complement of backing musicians, My Sweet Elixir nevertheless peaks with a couple of songs cut with just one other player, multi-instrumentalist Lucy Pollard, whose piano is spectral accompaniment to another McCartney-ish ballad, "Fool's Gold," and who then adds cello and melodica to the sweet "Chasing Stars" -- a number that puts one in mind of countryman Chris de Burgh at the adventurous outset of his career. That's not a comparison that one should take to heart, however, nor one that should recommend (or otherwise) King to anyone who's never heard him. But it is an illustration of just how broad Fran King's musical palette is, and just how far he could end up going.
