Description: During the Nazi occupation things go from bad to worse. People are starving, found dead in their homes, from starvation. Mom decides to do something to save her family, setting off with little Pete on a journey to find a better place as the allied bombing starts, making life extremely dangerous. The story of how my brother Pete was declared dead, from starvation in a hospital is told. Foppe goes underground and Mom loses track of him. Later she has a vision of where he is, dying and calling her name. She finds him, still alive but barely, just as the vision showed her. He dies a few days later. The story of how she literally wore her feet to the bone walking barefoot, 30 or so miles on gravel is told. She tells the detailed story of getting out of Holland after the war and emigrated to the United States. She tells the story of meeting my dad, Deforrest Olsen. He proposes marriage and she accepts. From that came my two sisters and me. He took Pete in as his own son and treated him well.
