Description: In this autobiography, William "Bill" Purser, a retired airline and CIA pilot, relates the story of his adventurous life, including his career in aviation and his spiritual awakening in later life.Bill, a native of Georgia, took his first airplane ride at age nine in a Pan American Ford Tri-Motor that landed in his Depression-era hometown, and from then on all he wanted was to be a pilot. Working at the local airport in return for flying instruction, he soloed at age sixteen. A year after graduating high school in 1942, he joined the Navy, serving as an Aviation Radioman-Gunner on dive and torpedo bombers during WWII. Returning home in 1946, he married his Rhode Island sweetheart, resumed flying under the GI Bill and finally obtained his pilot ratings. With the experience he earned as a flight instructor and charter pilot flying cargo and passengers, he secured a dream job with American Airlines. During his twelve years with American, tragedy struck his personal family life, leading him to choices that would eventually turn his career in a new direction. After a disappointing stint in a family electrical business, he began flying for the CIA, a job that took him around the world and provided numerous interesting and sometimes hair-raising experiences. A series of twists and turns in his career took him in and out of aviation and eventually brought him back to his hometown in Middle Georgia, where he retired as a civil servant and started writing his memoir. It was during this time that he finally recognized the heretofore unacknowledged thread of spirituality that had always been present in his life to guide and protect him. As he recalled numerous hazardous incidents throughout his flying career, he came to the startling conclusion that it wasn't his skill and training nor even luck that had kept him safe--it was the Divine help of God and his personal Guardian Angel.Bill passed away in 2009 at his home in Georgia. In 1998, Bill was a candidate for the Georgia Author of the Year Award.25
