Description: This stunning 9 3/4” dinner plate has an intricate pattern around the rim with four cartouches containing classical vases. Its scalloped edges reach the mulberry/purple pattern, the center of which is dominated by two female figures. As the name of the pattern proclaims, one of the figures is “Athena,” Greek Goddess of Wisdom and War, and the second figure may well be her closest female companion, Nike, the Goddess of War, although in this print neither wears their identifying helmets. This plate would easily grace the table, the cabinet or even hung as a wall decoration. The partnership of Marple, Turner & Co., formed to manufacture ironstone and other earthenware, was only in existence for 8 years (1850 - 1858). The firm operated out of the Upper Hanley Works, Far Green, Hanley, Stoke on Trent. The partners were John Marple, George Wardle Turner, William Ellis and John Tomkinson. The Athenian pattern, registered in 1852, was one of their most important and was a mainstay of their operation. The pattern was also produced in brown.
