Measuring an immense 132 feet long and weighing in at almost 1.2 million pounds, the Big boy was the largest steam engine of all time and proudly carried its descriptive monikor coined by an Alco shopworker. The engine's unequaled size required that lighter rails be replaced, turntables rebuilt, and curves realigned to accept the tremendous overhang.
