Pby CataclysmicKnight 05 Sep 2019, 16:56 [Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Mr Words Waggle Tongue" by J Alfred Burroughs.] 3 out of 4 stars. The Bible is packed with wisdom. While I've never once read it from cover to cover, I've heard many of the passages and lessons from other books, as well as my time in Catholic school and church. One thing I was never aware of was just how many well-known verses lie in the book of James. Luckily, Mr. Words Waggle Tongue: Inspired by the Epistle of James by J. Alfred Burroughs set the record straight. Despite a title that sounds like it belongs to a children's book and a cover that would give those same children nightmares, Mr. Words Waggle Tongue (as I'll refer to it henceforth) is a Christian nonfiction book. Burroughs takes readers through various portions of the Epistle of James, covering some of the major portions in added detail. Chapters include the importance of showing one's faith through actions, not just words, the power of one's tongue, and other important topics. With all of this occurring in a book that barely crosses 40 pages in length, these topics aren't given a whole lot of added depth, but they're covered in a way that anyone can understand. The one thing that really set this book apart was the inclusion of Mr. Words Waggle Tongue himself. Unfortunately, it's also the book's biggest flaw. See, the book begins by explaining Mr. Words Waggle Tongue's situation: he used to go to church every week, but something changed and he no longer wanted to go to church or Bible study. This leads into a conversation between him and Joseph, someone who Mr. Words Waggle Tongue took under his wing, in which they discuss various reasons people do or don't go to church. Statistics are brought up as well, and some fairly solid conversation and debate was had. But then this whole concept of a discussion is dropped and the rest of the book is purely nonfiction aside from a couple of sentences at the end of the second chapter. There isn't even a "so that's why you should come back to church, Mr. Words Waggle Tongue!" at the end of the book to tie it all together, or some type of revelation by Mr. Words Waggle Tongue himself. In addition to a narrative that's entirely shrugged off like a jacket when entering a restaurant, the first chapter is jarringly separate from the rest of the book. This is a shame because the rest of the book is really solid! Without a narrative to deal with, Burroughs explains things well throughout the rest of the book, and the lessons had me reflecting even while reading. Yes, I do need to learn to listen better, and yes, I do need to remember to pray even when I don't need anything. I also need to remember the power of one's tongue to elevate others or tear them down. Burroughs even goes so far as to compare one of the most famous comic quotes ("With great power comes great responsibility" from Spider-Man) to Luke 12:48: "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. Mr. Words Waggle Tongue gave me a lot to think about, and it did something no other book has done: it made me want to read through a whole book of the Bible. Mr. Words Waggle Tongue is a great reminder to Christians that actions speak louder than words, that worldly possessions mean nothing in the afterlife, and that listening is underrated. I'd give the book 3.5 stars if I could as the false start really threw me off, but unfortunately, the lack of editing forces me to round my rating down to 3 out of 4 stars. I came across 11 errors in the book, mostly issues with spacing and quotation marks. I'd still happily recommend the book to Christians that need to be inspired to act, listen, and pray. ****** Mr Words Waggle Tongue Outskirts Press announces Mr. Words Waggle Tongue, the latest highly-anticipated RELIGION / Biblical Studies / New Testamentbook from Fort Worth, TX author J.
