Title: Mr. George's Joint Author: Elizabeth Lee Wheaton Copyright 1941 by E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc.Publisher: E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc. [A Viriginia Quarterly Review Book] Hardback with Dust JacketSTATED FIRST EDITION 375 pages Elizabeth Lee Wheaton (nee Fulton) was born and lived most of her life in Texas. Her father was a newspaper publisher. She attended Rice Institute and Southwest Texas State Teachers' College. After a brief stint as a school teacher, she married Grant W. Wheaton, a railway company executive. Thereafter she devoted herself to family, dramatics, social service work, and writing. Mr. George's Joint was awarded the 1941 Thomas Jefferson Southern Award "for the best book manuscript by a Southern author". The award, which was launched in 1940, was offered by E. P. Dutton and Company and The Virginia Quarterly Review. According to the dust jacket, the competition for the award was fierce with 289 manuscripts submitted. The contest came down to Wheaton's novel and Some Lose Their Way, by Eloise Liddon. The judges observed: Mr. George's Joint is an entirely novel and realistic study of Negro life of a type and a veracity hitherto not encountered by any of the judges. Our unanimous opinion is that in view of its strong contemporary interest and admirable characterization, as well as its complete novelty, Mr. George's Joint is worthy of the Award, Some Lose Their Way being a very close second. The dust jacket was designed by the noted illustrator Arthur Hawkins, Jr. (1903 - 1985). He created dust jackets for novels written by some of the leading authors of the era, including John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Evelyn Waugh, John O'Hara, and James M. Cain. Hawkins was for many years the toastmaster of the New York Art Directors Club. He was the Club's president from 1945 to 1946. His work has featured in a 2012 article in Print magazine, written by Steven Heller. Please see above for complete description of condition (which has some issues) and for photos. Sold as is.
