Although his birthplace is unknown, he was active in Osaka. His name was Shuzo, his pen name was Shuga, and his first pen name was Sosen, later changing it to Sosen in 1818. He studied under Yamamoto Joshunsai of the Kano school in Osaka, and after Joshunsai's death, he was influenced by Maruyama Okyo and began to place importance on realism, and his monkey drawings were praised as unparalleled. He was the founder of the Mori school, including his older brother Mori Shuho. He adopted Mori Tetsuzan, the son of Shuho and a senior disciple of Maruyama Okyo. He died in 1821 at the age of 74.
