MONSTER OF FRANKENSTEIN SC (MARVEL COMICS) PUBLISHER Marvel Comics WRITER Gary Friedrich, Doug Moench & Bill Mantlo ARTIST Mike Ploog, John Buscema, Bob Brown, Val Mayerik & Don Perlin COVER ARTIST John Romita Sr 536 pages Graphic Novel Gothic horror in the macabre Marvel manner! One of the most terrifying figures in all of fiction lurches into his own 1970s comic-book series, collected in color for the first time. Witness a dramatic retelling of Mary Shelley's literary classic, then follow the Monster in his quest for the last living descendant of his creator, Victor Frankenstein. It's an odyssey that will lead him into confrontation with Marvel's other groovy ghoulies, Dracula and Werewolf by Night! Plus: the full rage of the Monster is unleashed in lavishly illustrated, but rarely seen, tales from the heyday of Marvel magazines. It's enough to bring the dead back to life! Collecting Frankenstein (1973) #1-18, Giant-Size Werewolf #2 and Marvel Team-Up (1972) #36-37 - plus material from Monsters Unleashed #2 and #4-10, and Legion of Monsters (1975) #1. From the classic adaptation with great Ploog art, to more Universal inspired stories fighting Dracula, then suddenly to modern times, black and white more mature stories, putting him a little bit into the Marvel universe by having him team up with Werewolf By Night, and finally throwing in the towel and with the Spider-Man team up. Along the way he gets a mouse's brain for a while, he talks, he doesn't talk, he talks again, later he has a Rich Jones type companion to hang around with, then a robot. All this from just 18 regular issues of the comic and a handful of black and white appearances. Just crazy. An amazing time-capsule treasure-trove that shows the past really was where they did things differently. Monster of Frankenstein is a more than half forgotten sidebar to Marvel's genre-spanning heyday. Admittedly the span only went from science fiction and superheroes to classic horror monsters, but never mind the width, just feel the quality. Mike Ploog's artwork on the first half dozen issues are a joy worth the paltry price of admission on their own. His organic, gothic approach is not quite right for prime-time superheroics, but I'm a big fan of his work for the same period's black and white Marvel/Curtis Planet of the Apes series. What can you say about Gary Freidrich's opening writing salvo? The high drama! The tortured soul! The exclamation marks!!! When you're used to post-millennium comics, the contrast is mind-blowing. The grey prose of modern writers shrinks like an anaemic, Victorian aristocrat in the shadow of Freidrich's code-approved evocation of the bone-crushing, blood-dripping embodiment of monster horror. In modern comics the text panel is almost forgotten and the art can stretch the action of a few fleeting minutes across page after page after page. Here the action is tight and dense and there are an extraordinary number of words on the page. This, truly, was the age of show AND tell! And punctuation!!! It's a thick volume of old school comics. Finding it was like stumbling on a late night compilation of forgotten seventies rockers and watching it to the end, with the same sense of let-down as it wrapped up and the credits scrolled. Collects Frankenstein (1973) 1-18, Giant-Size Werewolf 2 and Marvel Team-Up (1979) 36 and 37 plus material from Monsters Unleashed 2 and 4-10 and Legion of Monsters # 1! Near mint, 1st printing.
