Description: On offer, we have "Monsieur Beaucaire" by Booth Tarkington. It is illustrated by C.D. Williams with 6 tissue protected plates. Each tissue has the title of the portrait. This First Edition was published in 1900 by McClure, Phillips & Co., New York. It is their first issue with the 1/2" publisher's seal on the last page. The hardcover binding is red cloth with gold printing. After years of collecting rejection slips, Booth Tarkington's first published work The Gentleman from Indiana (1899) made him "the most famous young man in America" and quickly led to the publication of Monsieur Beaucaire, an 18th-century romance that Tarkington had actually written first but had not been able to place with a publisher. This popular work was turned into plays. operettas, and later movies starring Rudolph Valentino and Bob Hope. This 128 page book measures 7 3/4" X 5 1/4" and weighs 11.4 ounces. Included, is a signed slip of paper "Very Truly Yours, Booth Tarkington". With his Hoosier sensibilities, Tarkington chose to write his autograph on cut out watermarked stationery, instead of buying a card. He did use a nice ink pen. This measures 2 1/4" X 4 7/8". We do not know the date of the autograph. Yes, the signature is authentic. It was inspected by my antiquarian book seller and closely compared to his Booth Tarkington autographs in his inventory. . Both book and autograph are in excellent condition. The binding on the book has some wear on the edges with top and bottom of spine gently frayed. The covers are lightly spotted. There is a bookplate and another owner's signature. The pages are crisp and clean with only occasional fingerprints. The book is complete and securely bound. The autograph is bold, clean and clear. The slip of stationery has some light wrinkles. Please view my photographs for more description. My friend who collects everything, and is moving to a much smaller home. Now is starting to part with a few of his collections. I will be happy to answer any questions and, of course, combine your shipping.
