MacGregor Jr., who is known in the New England area as the Junkyard Artist. ------------------------------------------------------------- Monomoy Point Light is located in South Monomoy Island, Chatham, MA. The lighthouse was first established in 1823 and was a wood tower with a brick lantern room on top of the keeper's house. The current cast iron structure was built in 1849. After the opening of the Cape Cod Canal in 1914 the lighthouse was deactivated in 1923 due to less ship traffic. The Lighthouse keeper’s house serves today as a guest house. Monomoy was once a peninsula about eight miles long reaching southward from Chatham and has now been split by erosion and the storms, especially the 1978 storm into North and South Monomoy island. Today the lighthouse is only accessible by boat and about a mile from the shore.
