Includes Fully Embroidered Monogram Classic Collector's Patch inside box. This is an authentic quarter-inch scale, detailed model of Navy's carrier-based SB2C-5 Helldiver dive bomber, built by Curtiss. The real Hellfire has a wing span of 50 feet and is 37 feet long. Powered with a 1900 hp Cyclone engine with top speed of 294 mph. The airplane, with the experimental number XSB2C-1 was first flown in November 1940. Its first action was at Rabaul on November 11, 1943 when 24 bombers attacked Japan's "Little Pearl Harbor." Nine days later, Helldivers took part in the action at Makin and Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands, followed by raids on Truk and the Marianas. The Marines and Air Force used the airplane with designation A-25. The Helldiver is one of Monogram's finest action models. The wings fold just as they do on the real plane; the landing gear and arresting hook are retractable and the two canopies slide open or closed. Bomb bay doors open and release bomb. Companion models, and making a fascinating and historical display when grouped together are Monogram's TBF Avenger - SBD Dauntless - F4F Wildcat (not included).
