Description: Mister Roberts (1955) (EX-RENTAL VHS) Warner #1017 (1983) Fonda, Cagney, Lemmon Boxed and shipped with USPS Media or Priority Mail. Warner #1017 EX-RENTAL VHS Clamshell Color, Approx 120 mins Month after month, beneath a blazing Pacific sun, The Reluctant carries cargo from port to port along the forgotten seaways of World War II. It's crew is going crazy. Somewhere, below the horizon, the war - the real war - is passing them by. Thomas Higgins' novel "Mister Roberts",8 recreated as a long-running Broadway play by Hagen and Joshua Logan, served as the model for this wise comedy of men fighting to survive, not the dangers, but the indignities of war. Henry Fonda gives one of the finest performances as Lieutenant Roberts. Director John Ford insisted upon Fonda for the leading role. Although Fonda played the part of Mister Roberts on Broadway, he had not made a film in 7 years. When illness forced Ford to withdraw, Mervin Leroy took over direction of the picture, retained Fonda, and filmed a sensitive, quietly heroic portrayal that restored Fonda's screen career. Jack Lemmon won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor as Ensign Pulver, the Reluctant's officer in charge of laundry and morale. This was only Lemmon's fourth film roll, but he had already mastered the comic delivery and mannerisms that would become his trademark. James Cagney, as captain of The Reluctant, and William Powell, as it's world-weary medical officer, deliver strong support. Cagney is particularly memorable as the petty, ambitious tyrant who refuses to endorse Lieutenant Roberts' continuing request for transfer. Fonda and Cagney make wonderful adversaries; their scenes together crackle with tension. Mister Roberts has moments of unforgettable hilarity, including Pulver's demolition of the ship's laundry and the crew's return from liberty after months aboard. But the comedy is tempered by sadness. Not a shot fired. Not a drop of blood spilled. Yet Mister Roberts is one of our finest, most truthful war stories.
