One artists whose work I will gladly offer is that of Elena Mera and her son, Toño Rodriguez. Señor Rodriguez is making his way into the world of Pottery art after working under his mothers guidance. He has the dedication and love of the craft to put in the extra effort for these miniature pieces to assure their durability. He uses the native red clay, forming thicker wall, and fires them extra long but at lower temperatures to assure a harder vessel. Toño's skills in fanciful festive designs are inherited. This piece has a white lined, overlapping feather impressions encircling the top. An outer ring features inter-folding squares in a continuous unbroken movement. The waist area is yet another outer band featuring even more complex designs. So much detail for suck a miniature piece. And he even manages to fit his signature on the bottom. The textures and designs are all an homage to the Artists ancestors, the Paquime Culture of the Casas Grandes Region from 1000 years in the past. This Mata Ortiz is modern Chihuahua culture married with the ancient spirit of the region. In the 70's a young man began experimenting with recreating ancient pottery he would come across. He used the same clay sand mixtures from materials found in the area in which the ancients lived and made their pottery. The same firing techniques using the same local materials eventually created the same magnificent results. Half a century later and much of the village of Mata Ortiz has taken on these incredible skills for creating masterpieces, with each artist contributing hers and his own sense of beauty. The designs are bold, earthy and individualistic. Paint brushes consisting of one or two human hairs create the finest lines. Images revealed through carvings are created by nearly microscopic sharpened points. Paints are developed from minerals found in the surrounding desert. Many colors are only revealed after intense firing at very high temperatures. These creations are truly unique transformations that only this small little region of the world can create from it's own soil. I have been tangentially around Mata Ortiz for 30 years.
