Nice compact small size to add to your collection. This is a fine vintage, pre-1985, example of the sculptor's art combined with his sense of humor. Pug sitting on a floral pillow with gold gilded trim. Unique piece signed by the sculptor along with an original red/gold label on base. His delightful handcrafted models have become increasingly difficult to acquire. Approximately 2-1/8" W x 3" H In overall good condition but with vintage crazing throughout and natural production inclusions. Basil Matthews, (1913–1985 ), was a Welsh artist and potter. An internationally acclaimed designer and figurine artist. He produced models of animals, often avoiding mass production and making no more than 100 of each model. He was a self-taught ceramicist and opened his own studio in the late 1940s. Starting with horses, went on to produce models of all kinds of animals, receiving an endorsement from Her Majesty Queen Mary for his work.
