MILKWEED BUTTERFLIES Monarchs, Models, & Mimics Hilda Simon HC DJ ILLUS 1969 -31

Description: MILKWEED BUTTERFLIES Monarchs, Models, and MimicsWritten and Illustrated by Hilda SimonWith a Foreword by John Pallister_________________ Hardcover with dust jacket; 120 pages; Size Approx. 8 1/4 X 11.Published by The Vanguard Press; Copyright 1969.Details: "Hilda Simon, author of the beautiful and Scientifically accurate Exploring the World of Social Insects, one of the 60 outstanding juvenilesof its year selected by the American Library Association, here turns her focus on another aspect of insect life: the milkweed butterflies. This family, though not very large, is one of the most interesting of the butterfly groups. Its best-known member, the Monarch, is found in all sections of North America, and other species are native to various parts of Africa, Asia, and South America. This handsome volume concentrates primarily on the development of the North American Monarch. Not only is this species the prototype of all members of the family, but one fascinating aspect of its life span is unique: these butterflies, with only a four-inch wing spread, make seasonal migrations of more than a thousand miles during their brief lifetime. The book also looks at other members of the milkweed family that, like the Monarch, are protected in their struggle for survival by unpalatable body juices and serve as 'models' for members of other families, which mimic them. And, in addition, Miss Simon devotes a chapter on how to raise butterflies at home. Miss Simon's meticulous illustrations, almost all in full color, include maps and diagrams as well as detailed studies of the various stages of the life cycle. This book is a 'must' not only for libraries and schools but for the many children--and adults--entranced by the wonders of life." (from the dust jacket flap) The book has an orange cloth binding with an illustration of a butterfly on the front cover in gilt; gilt lettering on the spine; beautifully illustrated. A fine addition for your bookshelf!Condition: This is an ex-library book with all of the usual markings and attachments. The book and endpapers have tape residue on them where the dust jacket was attached; otherwise the book is in good condition with a firm binding and clean pages. The dust jacket is in a clear mylar protective sleeve; there is a minor rip on the front cover; the folds are a little soiled; otherwise the dust jacket is in good condition. Note: The letter/number at the end of the title line for this listing is just an inventory code for locating the book.ShippingFree Domestic Economy Shipping!Check out my other items!Be sure to add me to your favorites list!About Us:Rivendell Antiquarian Books sells used rare, vintage and collectable books predominantly from pre 1970. We have been sellers of antiquarian books for over 20 years, and our experience helps ensure quality descriptions of our rare and collectable books. Be assured that we want your experience with Rivendell Antiquarian Books to be enjoyable and problem free. We believe that it is a travesty to simply throw away a used book when there is little or nothing wrong with it - we believe in giving each book the chance of finding a new home. We appreciate the impact a good book can have. We know the excitement of a new page turner, or the familiar joy of an old favorite, and we find satisfaction in putting older, and often scarce books in the hands of people who have the same love for old books that we do.Customer Service:Rivendell Antiquarian Books is committed to ensuring each customer is entirely satisfied with their puchase and our service. If you have any issues or concerns please contact us and we will be more than happy to help. Our books have been inspected carefully by hand by experienced book valuers to ensure the condition description is as accurate as possible for this exact copy pictured. If you have questions about the book before or after purchasing, please feel free to contact us!Packaging:We take pride in packaging our books for safe delivery, and if you check our feedback, you will see this reflected in the comments of many pleased customers. For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery: We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
