Description: Unique Ashtray brass shell with lighter made from bullets. Extreme detailed work to make this item. There are (9) distinctive unit insignia (DUI) crest pins encircling what appears to be a military shell that acts as the ash basin. The ash basin has 3 cigarette holders built from bullet casings that were cut in half supported by bullet head that all welded/soldered in place. The ash basin is supported by 3 ball feet that were tapped into bottom of shell. The circular basin is removable when you unscrew the feet. The lighter is made from a 50 caliper type bullet with a removable head that has a top ring supported by 3 bullet heads encircled with city pins of various German cities. The bullet is cut approximately in half and when you remove the top there is a lighter inside. This lighter assembly sits on a ball which is attached to another brass piece that is screwed to bottom basin. The DUI’s pins are mounted on a brass pieces that are tapered to sit perpendicular to base. A lot of work just to make these DUI bases which are then screwed/secured through inside of basin wall. The DUI’ / crests represent the following battalions; 5th Engineer, 656 Engineer Topographic, 10th Cavalry(Buffalo Soldier), 97th Signal, 547 Engineer, 3rd Calvary(Mechanized), 26th Field Artillery, 385th military police, and one German made that reads ”Wir Schlagen die Brucke” translating to “we conquer the bridges” (Odd Words to Crest). The bullet head lighter has (9) German City pins welded/soldered to a ring; Heidelberg, Hamburg, Berchtesgaden, Frankfurt/m, Munchen, Hamburg(again), Mannheim, Salzburg, Berlin, and Heidelberg. The beauty is the precision of the work put into creating this piece. We researched if the battalion crests correlate to the cities and to some extent they do but there was not much info on each area visited by specific battalion.
