Texas Flyer He may be one of the most lauded artists in the contemporary blues arena today, and rightfully so, but for Mike Zito, the thing that counts the most is maintaining his honesty, authenticity and integrity. Those are the qualities that have steered Zito’s career since the beginning and continue to define every effort he’s offered since. “I have nothing to hide; it seems my honesty is what people relate to most,” he once told Vintage Guitar magazine. “Anders (Osborne) told me early on, ‘If you don’t believe what you’re singing, you’ll never be a good singer.’ I try not to write fluff; I try to make every word count.” A real musician's natural environment isn't the studio, the glitzy showbiz party, or the 5-star hotel. If Mike Zito was getting a dollar for every kilometer he'd racked up on tour since his breakthrough in the early '90s, he'd be a rich man today. But there's an undeniably magical side to life on tour - especially when the lights dim, the crowd roar increases and the shadows move onto the stage. For Mike, who's been touring since he was 18 and has played with the Brotherhood in over 20 countries, this is when things get serious. Songs From The Road is a CD/DVD set that captures Mike at his best in his adopted homeland. "The DVD and live album were recorded at Dosey Doe in The Woodlands, Texas on January 10, 2014 - to a sold-out venue full of crazy Texans," he recalls. “The audience was hooked from the first note and the band played with such energy and passion. I was totally overwhelmed several times by the sheer energy in the room. It truly was a magical night that I will never forget.” Also performing was Mike's All Star lineup of Jimmy Carpenter (saxophone/vocals), Scot Sutherland (bass/vocals), Lewis Stephens (piano/organ) and Rob Lee (drums/percussion). “With the guys from The Wheel”, says the bandleader, “we are all on the same wavelength. Nobody wants to show off themselves. We want to play together." So the chemistry is right and in Songs From The Road meets an outstanding setlist that also tells of Mike's eventful past. There's "Greyhound," for example: the somber travelogue that chronicles the serious events that took place in September 2002, when a drug addict Mike stole his father's credit card and bought a one-way bus ticket to Florida. "I figured I'd be doing everyone a favor if I just disappear and get as far away as I can." The emotional counterpart is the song "Rainbow Bridge", which tells of the high that the reformed Mike experienced when he finally got home. "The Rainbow Bridge is one of the largest bridges in the South," he explains. "When I drive back from a concert in Louisiana, I come across this rainbow bridge and then I always know that I'll be home soon." Die-hard Zito fans at Dosey Doe may have been waiting for Pearl River: Written by Mike and Cyril Neville, the song about civil rights activist Dick Gregory laid the foundation for the Royal Southern Brotherhood. There was also deafening applause for the title track of Mike's studio album Gone To Texas, released last year. "The song is also about the history of Texas, which used to be a place of refuge for people to get their lives back on track," says Mike. "And that's what I did." This is true though. The band leader grew up in poor St. Louis in a working-class family whose father worked at the local brewery. Ten years working in a guitar shop, Mike dealt with the likes of B.B. King, whom Allmans and Eric Clapton trusted (and from then on Joe Pass, Robert Johnson and Blind Willie Johnson), and in 1997 he released his debut album Blue Room. "The first time you hear yourself," Mike recalls, "you're like, 'Wow, that almost sounds like music!'" Of course, Mike's path continued to have bumps. Alcoholism and drug abuse threatened to rob Mike of his talent and livelihood. For a while it seemed too late. But since meeting his wife ("I owe her everything"), Mike has blossomed both as a person and as a musician, and as of 2014 he can already look back on a stellar string of solo albums and two records with the Royal Southern Brotherhood. "Everything is going great," he confirms, "and I couldn't be more grateful." Happy, successful, surrounded by his family and with some acclaimed projects, you could actually see Mike resting on his laurels. But no chance. Songs From The Road proves that the endless freeway still won't let go of Mike. "The street is part of the whole story," he says. “That's why there are so many songs about it. When a tour ends I can't wait to get home. But a week later, the fingertips are tingling again. It's like the song says: The road never ends."SHIPPING TO USA ONLY Buyer Pays Shipping $3.99 1st CD $3.99... each additional $1.50 CDs will only be combined with other CDs or DVDs To qualify for the combined discount, all items must be purchased together, paid for with 1 payment, and shipped all together in 1 shipment.
