MIDLAND LOCAL The Johnson IP 0-4-4s worked branch line trains for the Midland Railway, the London, Midlands and British Railways. Built in 1881 some were still in service in the 1950S. The angular rear half of the locomotives contrasted strongly with the elegant curves of the front boiler area but they still had a purposeful air. A London, Midland & Scottish Johnson class IP tank locomotive, No 1340 (later British Railways No 58053) pulls away from a branch-line halt with a two-coach local train.
