Description: Up for sale is an original Cambodian temple rubbing on rice paper from Angkor Wat, first a Hindu, then subsequently a Buddhist, temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. This piece was created prior to 1967; the art of temple rubbing has been banned by the Cambodian government in an attempt to preserve the beauty of the Temples. This Bas-relief is quite scarce since the practice of taking rubbings is now banned at the temple complex in the country. Dates to the mid 20th Century. Good vintage condition. Normal wear for its age. There is a small area where the rice paper has come apart some at the very top center and another area to the right of the tree next to the left figure, and there is a small chip in the surface of the rice paper at the bottom center (see photos). There are 3 tiny holes throughout the art piece but I believe these are intentional. No other discrepancies. The bas relief rubbing, on very thick paper (most likely rice paper), is a detailed architectural scene. Green and gold are the dominant colors. Truly a work of art.
