It is not recommended to seed in hot and dry periods as more watering will be necessary. You can also dormant seed over frozen ground or snow in winter as long as there is not thick vegetation below the snow. Site Preparation: After mowing the area to .5", break up clumps or move clippings off to the side and rake any additional thatch. The soil must be visible and loosened up before seeding. Lightly rake seed into the soil after spreading. Seed to soil contact is critical for success. Thick lawns or sod should be core aerated before seeding. Cover lightly with straw if seeding bare soil or if the area is sloped. Application Rate: Coverage area is based on over-seeding an existing grass lawn area which will create a mixture of micro clover and grass. If seeding over bare soil, add 2-4 lbs of low input grass seed such as a blend of fine fescues or if you would prefer a clover only lawn it is best to remove the grass first or increase seeding rate by 2-5x recommended coverage rate. Post Seeding Care Watering: It is critical to lightly water 1-3 times daily after seeding for a period of 2-3 weeks, then water as needed. After the first year, watering deeply during dry periods may be necessary to survive extended droughts. Mowing: Mow once the grass has grown back to 3" and maintain a mowing height of 2.5-3" for the first year. Micro clover can grow larger leaves and even produce flower blooms if not mowed regularly. Fertilizer: If your soil is poor it is beneficial to apply a compost based organic starter fertilizer at the time of seeding such as a 4-6-4 or similar. For lawns that have not been fertilized recently it may also be beneficial to apply a low nitrogen organic fertilizer 2-3 months after seeding such as a 9-0-2 or similar.
