Illustrator: Franziska Harvey. Arrangers: Mi Loco Tango; Astor Piazzolla. The cheesy romance-movie aspects of the tango are frequently emphasized by its less imaginative performers; the emotional anguish at its core, close in spirit to the raw pain of flamenco, is less commonly explored. On this album, Mi Loco Tango offer a much deeper and more nuanced journey into the music. The instrumentation -- violin, accordion, piano, and bass -- is traditional, and the compositions are all by the master of the style, Astor Piazzolla, but by sticking to one theme, an album is created in place of a mere collection of songs. Throughout his career, at various points Piazzolla wrote religious material, and those are the pieces gathered here, separated into two bunches (the "angel" songs and the "devil" songs) with some other, more or less related works as bridges. Some have an almost Balkan feel, like "La Resurreccion del Angel," where the bowed bass stalks along behind the piano as though winding down darkened mountain paths, while the accordion zooms in and out like a bird of prey. There's a strong element of jazz improvisation to these versions, though no piece ever becomes a mere excuse for wild soloing -- the group interaction is always the point, as in a string quartet. This is very beautiful, austere yet florid music, a fitting tribute to tango's greatest composer. About Movie Mars All items are Brand New.
