Description: Mexican Velvet Obsidian is a higher quality obsidian with loads of magnetite that create the velvet like pattern and flashes within! It often features many different colors, and it works into some truly amazing cabochons! It takes an excellent polish and generally cuts fracture free! They can also make awesome pendants or can be great for wire wrapping projects! The color in velvet obsidian is light sensitive. In order to see it, you need to be under bright light, and the stone has to be turned correctly, similar to how a fire opal behaves. With this in mind, this stone is not for everyone and takes some creativeness to work correctly. Without things being optimal, it will appear mostly black. Mexican Velvet Obsidian can also be tumbled with great results! This tends to remove the skin and let more light in so you can see the color better, and it also takes a mirror grade polish as it is a volcanic glass! It does take some special care though, but it is 100% possible to get great results! We recommend doing the start of the polish with a rotary tumbler, and finishing with a vibra-tumbler, but great results are possible with just a rotary tumbler. Photos are taken with the stones wet. This helps you see their potential once polished. Weight: Approx 5 lbs 4.7 oz Measurements (inches - longest - approx): 6.2 x 4.1 x 4.5 I do my best to represent the stones with photos. I don't enhance photos, though sometimes brightness and contrast on monitors may differ, and while a photo may look just like the rock on my end, it will sometimes appear brighter or duller on your end.
