Description: —Mexican plum (Prunus mexicana)—U.S. native fruiting tree —Size: 25-30' tall by 25' wide —Site: full sun —USDA Hardiness Zones: 5-9 —To Propagate: 30-90 days cold, moist stratification—we have had the best success germinating this Prunus species with at least 60 days cold stratification. After the radicle (root) emerges from the seed during stratification, the seed can be removed and planted. The best is to not remove the seed until the radicle is at least one-half inch long for the proper cold treatment to overcome seed dormancy. Radicles will emerge over a two-to-three month period during stratification. This native is typically found on the prairie and the border of the forest. Very tolerant of heat and drought. The fruit is edible and most often made into jelly or pies though is also eaten fresh. A testament to its hardiness Mexican plum is used as stock for grafting cultivated plums. This plum does not sucker like the domesticated species hence its use for grafting. Absolutely beautiful when flowering in early spring its flowers coming out before its leaves just like ornamental plums and the showy Japanese cherry cultivars. The early flowering is welcomed by a variety of pollinators at a time when few plants are in bloom. Note: If you order more than one lot of one species of seeds, for example you place two orders of 100 seeds, or whatever variation is offered, we assume you want 200 seeds and your order will be sent in one seed packet.
