Description: Signed sheet PSA DNA CertifiedThe astronauts selected for Project Mercury by NASA on April 9, 1959 were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Duke Slayton. All of the seven flew in space. Alan Shepard (b. Nov. 18, 1923 - d. July 21) 1981)was the first American astronaut to fly in 1961. He walked on the moon during the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. Gus Grissom (b. April 3, 1926 - d. January 27, 1967) flew on the Gemini Mission in 1967. He tragically perished in the Apollo 1 fire training in the oxygen saturated capsule along with Ed White, and Roger Chaffee at Cape Kennedy FL. Wally Schirra flew the first crewed Apollo mission (Apollo 7) in 1968. He was the only astronaut to fly Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions. In 1968 he was the commander of an 11 day low orbit test of the Apollo command service module. The top of the page says Tow Test Vehicle DEI 27, September 1963The prime contractor was McDonnell Aircraft Corporation with a plant in Long Beach. Gus Grissom was heavily involved in the development of the Mercury and Gemini spacecraft. This may have been a test of the M2-F1 lifting body or design changes (as this fits the date)This sheet was purchased from an estate sale in Long Beach, Ca. Home of McDonnell Aircraft (prime contractor for Projects Mercury and Gemini) and many other aerospace companies in the area.
