His son William Dobson Valentine joined the firm in the 1860s and later his brother George Dobson Valentine joined him concentrating primarily on portraiture. In 1878 the firm changed its name from James Valentine to James Valentine & Sons. Following their father’s death in 1879, the partnership continued until1884 when George went on to New Zealand to become an important landscape photographer. In the late1880’s William’s son Harbon Valentine joined the firm continuing its growth until his death in 1949. Shortly after that the firm was taken over and in 1971 a major portion of the Valentine archive was donated to St. Andrews University, Scotland.
