The Institute then awarded him a Fellowship in 1955 which enabled him to work and travel in Europe for a period of one year. The first one man exhibition of Mel Silverman's art was held in New York in 1956. During the following ten years he also exhibited extensively in Chicago, Denver and elsewhere. Today, Mel Silverman's original woodcuts and paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the University of Minnesota, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Frederick R.
