Thanks to the recommendations of my new hire, Ive been following developments in the Chinese artisan scene recently, and Ive become quite enamored with their approach to sitters, i.e., self-standing pipe designs. Ping Zhan, for example, makes beautiful hybrid shape sitters, mixing elements of the cherrywood with the acorn or the Dublin. Zhang Guo Hui, a colleague and collaborator of Zhans, also makes really elegant sitters that almost look like ornate vases. So, as usual, I talked to my head carver in Eskişehir and asked him if he could bring something of these pipes to our meerschaums with, of course, the stipulation that I always add when discussing the sources of new shapes: Be inspired, but dont copy. This is one of the pipes that was the result of that inspiration. Its more stout than the Chinese style and the finish is distinctly Turkish, but nevertheless Id say its a pretty faithful and respectful homage.
