Description: From my collection is this charming painting of a young girl by New Hope and Nantucket artist Mary Sarg Murphy. My mother purchased this picture directly from the artist on Nantucket at some point in the 1960s or early 70s. I have reframed the work in a high quality Larsen Juhl gold metal leaf frame with a pale blue detail which I think is more complementary than the original wider frame. The original frame will be included in the sale if desired and comes from a smoke free environment. The work is executed on canvas and measures 8" x 10" and 12" x 14" as framed. The original frame dimension is 15 1/2" x 17 1/2". The choice is yours!Mary Sarg Murphy was born in London in 1911. She studied portraiture in London, and was educated at the Sorbonne in Paris France. She studied at the Arts Students League in NYC from 1930-1933. She further trained at the Phoenix Art institute and the New York School of applied Design for Women in NYC.She was a painter, illustrator, and decorative artist greatly influenced by her fun loving father Tony Sarg, who was a decorative artist, illustrator, and puppeteer. He is perhaps best known as the original designer of the Macy's Day parade in NYC.Mary began her art career decorating boxes and furniture for her father's shops in New Hope, PA and Nantucket, MA where the Sarg family spent their summers from 1923 on. She later designed fabrics, wallpapers, children's clothing and towels for the shops. She became an accomplished portrait painter. In the 1930s she became known for her illustrations for such magazines as Today, Woman's Day, and Mademoiselle, as well as illustrating children's books. She lived in New Hope until 1958, and moved permanently to Sarasota Fl. and Nantucket in 1960 with her husband John. She died in 1986 in Siesta Key, Sarasota, Florida.
