Description: Flavin, Martin - Journey in the Dark - Harper & Brothers: New York, 1943 - First Edition / First Printing / First Issue Dust Jacket - “First Edition" stated on the copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. While it is not a real issue point, this copy has the correct “I-S” date code. The I = September and the S = 1943. First issue dust jacket with the correct rear panel and price intact. “He wanted wealth, and he got it. He wanted to belong to the social world in which the Wyatts moved so easily, and in time he did. Most of all he wanted Eileen Wyatt, and this too he achieved, but only after a fashion. To explain this average man who had wanted success above everything, and who achieved an enviable degree of it and yet who never escaped from the prison of his loneliness, Martin Flavin takes the reader back to the friendly, democratic world that existed along the Mississippi in the Eighties, to the influences which shaped the boy and fixed the pattern of the man.” The book has rubbing to the edges and the tips, a light crease to the upper spine, and a crack in the binding between the title and half title pages. The boards remain rather straight and clean, lettering on the spine is clear and legible, binding is square, and internally there is no writing. The dust jacket is lightly soiled, is edge worn with some shallow nibbles, rubbed, and has had some older areas of tape mend on the verso to stabilize edges. The spine is lightly sunned but is not bleached as is so often the case. An extremely scarce book to find in anything approaching collectible condition because to the abysmal quality of materials that were used due to the war time restrictions. Winner of the Harper Prize as well as the Pulitzer Prize. All books are offered with a full 30 day postage paid return policy. All books which are in dust jackets will be mailed with a clear archival dust jacket protector fitted. Shipping costs can be combined if multiple purchases are made. Items will be packaged and shipped within one business day unless otherwise noted. Please always feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
