MARQUIS DE ROCHAMBEAU - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 11/03/1882 - HFSID 30387 MARQUIS DE ROCHAMBEAU Warm letter from the grandson of the commander of the French army which fought with the American Revolution, to US Commanding General (and recent Presidential candidate) Winfield Hancock, who had been his host at the centennial celebration of the victory at Yorktown. Autograph Letter signed: "Marquis de Rochambeau", 3 pages, 5x8. 51 Rue de Naples, Paris, 1882 November 3. In French, with original manuscript translation in English, to "My dear General" [Hancock], in full: "I am going to answer your letter of the 11th & that of the 29th of September & to thank you for them. Thanks to the Seal of Georgia which you sent me, my collection is complete & very curious. I have not received the last parcel spoken of in your last, but that is not at all astonishing, the packages are sometimes two months before reaching their destination, particularly in winter. Enclosed, I send an autographic letter of the Marshal de Rochambeau [Item not included.] and I am very pleased that it will be a pleasure to you. I send you also by mail, a newspaper, which contains an account of the inauguration of a room for an asylum that we have just built completely at our expense & which has occupied my time a great deal this summer. [Item not included.] That has not however prevented me from profiting by the shooting, in spite of the always growing decrease of game, in our country places. I was however still able to make several quite good bags. We have quite a number of hares, partridges, rabbits, quail, thrush, coon crake etc. - and if you should come to France, when the game laws are up I would be very happy to offer you the first day of the season. We have been back in Paris two days and I am recommencing seriously my work to finish the account of our magnificent journey to the United States. Good bye my dear General, will you recall Madame de Rochambeau to the kind recollection of Mrs. Hancock & present to her my most respectful regards, believing me always your very affectionate & devoted". Achille de Rochambeau, the Marquis de Rochambeau (1836-1897) was the grandson of the Count de Rochambeau, who commanded the French army sent to America in the later phases of the American Revolution and who shared with General George Washington in the triumph at Yorktown. (The British officer sent by Lord Cornwallis to the surrender ceremony attempted to surrender to Rochambeau, who insisted that the officer's sword must be yielded to Washington.) In 1881, great celebrations were held in Yorktown to commemorate the British surrender there. General Winfield Hancock, the capable Union Corps commander and by then Commanding General of the US Army, presided over the ceremony. (Hancock had been the Democratic nominee for President in 1880.) An obvious second purpose of the elaborate celebrations were to rekindle national patriotism only 16 years after the end of the Civil War. The ceremonies were attended by the descendents of many Europeans who had aided the American cause, including the families of LaFayette and von Steuben. Rochambeau and Hancock had each hosted dinners aboard vessels of their respective navies during the event. At his large estate near Paris, the Marquis kept a large collection of memorabilia from the campaigns of his grandfather and father (an aide to the Count Rochambeau in America). Toned and creased. Multiple folds. Minor ink smears (legible). Pin size holes at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
