Nini began practicing this art in Bologna while training in sculpture at the Clementine Academy in Bologna in the early 1730s. He won a second prize in sculpture at the 1735 Marsili Prize competition. After 1740 he traveled to Madrid where he married and practiced decorative crystal engraving. He was arrested in 1755 on charges of theft and then heresy, and remained imprisoned for two years. He moved to Paris where he began successfully producing his terracotta medallion portraits. In 1772 he moved to Chaumont-sur-Loire where he took over the management of the crystal and utilitarian ceramics factory created by Jacques-Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont. He worked there and continued his work as a medallion portrait sculptor at the same time until his death in 1786.He produces over one hundred and ten terracotta medallion portraits that immortalize contemporary personalities. In the tradition of artists like Edme Bouchardon or Jean-Antoine Houdon, as well as numismatics, Nini depicts his models in profile bust.He sculpted medallion portraits of his patron Jacques-Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont, Louis XV, Catherine II of Russia, Voltaire, the Count of Caylus or Benjamin Franklin. But many of his portraits fix the features of members of the petty aristocracy, clergy, or bourgeoisie around him.Nini is renowned for his virtuosity and finesse of execution. It is stamped. He first models a model probably made of wax from which he draws a hollow mold (which can be made of porcelain earth, sulfur or plaster) followed by a plaster bump, which generates a terracotta hollow mold used to pull the final terracotta proof. Each step is retouched by the artist. It uses a highly refined slipper to achieve maximum detail accuracy in the final proof draw.
