Description: HANDMADE CHARCUTERIE BOARD First and foremost, this is not simply a piece of un-dried lumber from the sawmill! An acquaintance called to say that the county had cut a 40’ wide swath of trees on a drainage easement on his property. He wanted to sell. The county left a pile of high quality logs along with tops and roots, etc., in a pile 20’ wide and tall X 100’ long to rot. We agreed on a price and I worked for three days to retrieve about forty logs. Because of the huge quantity, I took only the best quality maple. I sawed these on my WoodMizer and solar kiln-dried the lumber, including a couple live-edged boards to see if I could keep the bark intact to be made into charcuterie boards. This worked well with minor separations of the bark. I filled both edges and both sides with epoxy, just to adhere the loose bark. After this I applied multiple coats of oil-based satin polyurethane the bark edges to help harden and stabilize the flaky bark. The stabilized boards were sanded on a wide belt sander and came out clean and flat, a feat in itself with live-edged lumber. Once sanded these were cut into five lengths of assorted sizes. Ends were rounded over with a ¼” radius router bit and the bark edges were manicured with a flap sander. There will be a few saw/grind marks – hard to locate. The boards were flooded with food safe mineral oil twice and wiped to leave a non-gooey finish. The oil enhances the grain and keeps food juices from soaking in. The surface can be refreshed as often as needed. Mineral oil (not included) is available at Walgreens for $4 for a lifetime supply. Stains can be sanded out and re-sealed with the oil. Four self-adhesive vinyl feet are included and can be applied to either (dry) face if desired. Care instructions: Never place in a dishwasher or sink full of water!!! Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry with a towel. Wood isn’t plastic or stainless steel. Disclaimers: Wood is a natural and rather delicate material. It can warp, crack, etc., if mis-handled. Further, bark really wants to fall off of dry wood. I cannot guarantee it won’t happen, but I’ve taken every precaution. Bark is flaky and brittle – you will likely find that little pieces break off. Hard to notice. This is item #2 and has the following dimensions: Length 16-1/4" Width at widest point 14" Thickness 1-1/16” Check out the others. All are unique.
